Frequently Asked Questions

How does this text to speech tool work?

This tool uses the Web Speech API built into modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox). It accesses the text-to-speech voices installed on your operating system and speaks the text you provide. No audio data is uploaded to any server — everything runs locally in your browser.

Why are no voices showing up?

Voice availability depends on your browser and operating system. Chrome on Windows or macOS offers the most voices. If no voices appear, try refreshing the page, switching to Chrome or Edge, or installing additional language packs in your OS settings. Some browsers load voices asynchronously so they may appear after a short delay.

Can I change the reading speed?

Yes. Use the Speed slider to adjust playback rate from 0.5× (half speed) to 2.0× (double speed). The Pitch slider adjusts the voice tone, and Volume controls the loudness. Changes take effect the next time you press Speak.

How do I get more voices or languages?

Available voices come from your operating system. On Windows, go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region and add languages. On macOS, go to System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content to manage voices. On Chrome, you can also install extensions that add cloud-based TTS voices.

Is there a character limit?

This tool supports up to 5,000 characters per session. For longer documents, split the text into sections. The word progress bar helps you track reading position.

Can I download the audio output?

The Web Speech API does not support audio file export in most browsers. For downloadable audio files, you would need a server-side TTS service such as Google Text-to-Speech or Amazon Polly. This tool focuses on real-time listening directly in the browser without any data leaving your device.
