How is age calculated?
Age calculation seems simple — subtract your birth year from the current year. But an accurate age calculation accounts for whether your birthday has occurred yet this year, and calculates the exact remaining months and days.
For example, someone born on October 15, 1990, on April 12, 2025 is:
- 34 years, 5 months, and 28 days old
- NOT simply "34 years old" if their birthday hasn't occurred yet

Why "one year" is harder than it looks
Age arithmetic seems trivial until leap years and month lengths get involved, and the edge cases produce real bugs in real systems.
The 29 February problem. Someone born on 29 February 2004 has no birthday in 2025. Do they turn 21 on 28 February or 1 March? There is no universal answer — jurisdictions differ, and so do software libraries. Most systems default to 1 March, treating the birthday as "the day after the last day of February".
Month-end clamping. Adding one month to 31 January gives 28 or 29 February in most implementations, because 31 February does not exist. This makes month arithmetic non-reversible: add a month to 31 January, subtract a month, and you get 28 January rather than 31.
Order of operations. Adding one month then one day to 30 January is not the same as adding one day then one month. Date arithmetic is not commutative, which surprises people who expect it to behave like ordinary addition.
Time zones and the off-by-one day
A date of birth is a calendar date, not an instant. Storing it as a timestamp introduces a time zone, and a birthday can shift by a day depending on where it is read.
Stored as 2004-03-15T00:00:00Z and read in UTC−5, that becomes 14 March — and someone appears a day younger, which matters at exactly the boundary where an age check happens.
The fix is to store dates of birth as plain calendar dates (2004-03-15) with no time component and no zone, and to compare against the local current date. This is the single most common bug in age-verification code.
How age is counted elsewhere
The "years since birth, incremented on the anniversary" convention is not universal.
In the traditional East Asian age reckoning still used informally in parts of Korea and China, a person is 1 at birth and gains a year at Lunar New Year rather than on their birthday. A baby born the day before New Year turns 2 the next day. South Korea standardised on international age in law in 2023, but the traditional count persists conversationally.
Worth knowing if you are building anything that displays age to an international audience, or reading a document produced under a different convention.
Where exact age actually matters
- Legal thresholds — voting, driving, contracts, alcohol. These are date comparisons where off-by-one is a compliance failure, not a cosmetic bug.
- Medical dosing — paediatric dosage is frequently weight- and age-banded, and infants are often measured in months or even days.
- Insurance and pensions — premiums step at exact ages, and some policies use "age nearest birthday" rather than age last birthday.
- Sports eligibility — usually determined by age on a fixed cut-off date rather than today.
That last one catches people out: a player's competition age often depends on their age on 1 January or 1 September, not their age at the time of play.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are in a year for these calculations?
365.2425 on average under the Gregorian calendar, which is why leap years exist. A "days lived" figure should count actual calendar days rather than multiply years by 365 — the two diverge by roughly a day every four years.
Why does the day count differ from other calculators?
Usually inclusive versus exclusive counting — whether the birth date itself counts as day one. A one-day difference between tools is almost always this.
Can I calculate age at a past or future date?
Yes. Set the target date to something other than today to find your age at a historical event, or on a future qualifying date.
Does this work for dates before 1900?
Yes, though be aware that countries adopted the Gregorian calendar at different times — Britain in 1752, Russia in 1918. Dates before local adoption may be recorded in the Julian calendar, an eleven-to-thirteen day difference.
Is my date of birth sent anywhere?
